GUWAHATI: As many as 3,44,981 works under the MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Generation Act) are incomplete in Assam. Many of the incomplete MGNREGA works in the state have had zero expenditure in the past few years.

Statistics from the Union Ministry of Rural Development (MRD) have revealed this. According to the statistics, the Barpeta district has the highest number of 45,235 incomplete MGNREGA works, followed by Dhubri with 40,399, Cachar with 20,148, Nagaon with 19,977, and Morigaon with 17,642. The Kamrup (M) district has the lowest number of 734 incomplete MGNREGA works.

The statistics have further revealed that the expenditure is zero in 1,81,687 the incomplete MGNEREGA works in the past one year, in 38,657 incomplete MGNREGA works in the past two years, and in 16,721 incomplete MGNREGA works in the past three years.

The twin objectives of the MGNREGA are employment generation and the creation of assets in rural areas.

Assam was successful in employment generation under the MGNREGA by exceeding the target by 40 per cent in fiscal 2021-22. However, the state lags slightly in asset creation. The nodal department – Panchayat and Rural Development – needs to give its thrust to this area.

Assam generated 9.16 crore 'mandays' against the target of 6.5 crores in fiscal 2021-22.
