GUWAHATI: Fifty-five Union Ministries and Departments (non-exempted) have allocated Rs 94679.53 crore for the development of the eight northeastern states for the financial year 2023–24. Information from the Union Ministry of the Development of the Northeastern Region (DoNER) has revealed this.

As per the extant policy of the Government of India, all non-exempted Central ministries and departments (currently 55) are mandated to spend at least 10 percent of their gross budgetary support (GBS) on the central sector and centrally sponsored schemes for the Northeastern region. The Ministry of DoNER monitors and keeps track of such expenditures.

The information further reveals that from 2014–15 to 2022–23, the non-exempted Union ministries and departments allocated Rs 4,22,893.74 crore for the development of the Northeastern states and spent Rs 4,19,332.36 crore of the amount.

The expenditure breakup of such allocations is: Rs 24,819 crore in 2014-15, Rs 28,673. 73 crore in 2015-16, Rs 29,367. 90 crore in 2016-17, Rs 39,753. 44 crore in 2017-18, Rs 46,054. 80 crore in 2018-19, Rs 48,533. 80 crore in 2019-20, Rs 48,563. 82 crore in 2020–21, Rs 70,874. 32 crore in 2021–22, and Rs 82,691. 37 crore in 2022–23.
