GOLAGHAT: A 600-year-old Ghila tree (African dream herb) in Golaghat’s Hazrat Langarshah Aulia Dargah Sharif Mazar premises has been recognised as Assam’s oldest tree.

This historic tree has witnessed many ups and downs since the British era. This ghila tree covers seven bighas of land in the Hazrat Langarshah Aulia Dargah Sharif Mazar premises and has been entered in the ‘Heritage Trees of Assam’ book by the state’s Environment and Forest Department, recognising it as the oldest tree of Assam. The tree features in the top 100 historic trees from various districts of Assam list.

The Mazar Management Committee thanked the government for officially recognising the tree’s significance. They also invited students to conduct research on this ancient tree. This historic tree is not only a significant part of Assam’s heritage but also a testament to the region’s rich history and culture. Its recognition by the government highlights the importance of preserving such ancient trees for future generations.
