Guwahati: A total of 707.59 lakh persondays were generated in Assam under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (Mahatma Gandhi NREGS) in the financial year of 2024-25, which ended on March 31, 2025.

This was stated by Union Minister of State for Rural Development Kamlesh Paswan on the floor of the Rajya Sabha today. The revelation was made by the Union Minister while replying to a question posed by MP Dr V. Sivadasan regarding the implementation of Mahatma Gandhi NREGS.

According to Union Minister Kamlesh Paswan, a total of 623.06 lakh persondays were created in Assam in the financial year of 2019-20; persondays numbering 911.53 lakh were created in 2020-21; which was 915.85 persondays in 2021-22; 788.01 lakh persondays in 2022-23; and 874.99 persondays were created in 2023-24.

Among the NE states, Assam generated the highest persondays of 707.59 lakh under the scheme in the last financial year of 2024-25. The other states in the NE fared as follows—Arunachal Pradesh had 203.53 lakh persondays, Manipur had 240.93 lakh persondays, Meghalaya had 310.82 lakh persondays, Mizoram had 196.75 lakh persondays, Nagaland had 92.76 lakh persondays, Sikkim had 33 lakh and Tripura had a total of 352.70 persondays in that financial year. The country as a whole generated 28715.01 lakh persondays in FY 2024-25. The Minister further stated that Rs 1558.85 crore was released for Assam as the wage component in the financial year 2024-25.

According to the Union Minister, Mahatma Gandhi NREGS is a demand-driven wage employment scheme. It provides livelihood security, i.e., fallback options for livelihood for the rural households when no better employment opportunity is available.

Fund release to the States and Union Territories is a continuous process, and the Central Government is committed to making funds available to States and UTs for the implementation of the scheme as per demand for work on the ground, he added.
