GUWAHATI: Though the Assam Government has been settling inter-state boundary issues with its neighbouring states, 82,750 hectares (Ha) of land in the state are under the occupation of the neighbouring states.

State Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora informed the State Assembly of this today. Bora said, “While Nagaland encroached upon 59,490 hectares of Assam land, Arunachal Pradesh encroached upon 16,144 hectares, 3,675 hectares by Mizoram, and 3,441 hectares by Meghalaya.”

He said, “We have already settled many of the disputed border stretches with Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. We have already settled 71 of the 123 disputed villages with Arunachal Pradesh. We have signed an MoU with Aruanchal Pradesh in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to settle border disputes amicably. To settle the disputes over the remaining 52 villages, the regional committees of both states should submit their reports of field visits by October 20, 2023.”

Bora said, “We have sorted out six of the 12 disputed points with Meghalaya. Joint field visits are going on to resolve the disputes over the remaining six disputed stretches.”

Bora said, “Our talks with Mizoram to solve the border problems are going on at the preliminary stages. Since we have a case on boundary disputes with Nagaland pending at the Supreme Court of India, we will follow the directive of the apex court.”

Congress MLAs Debabrata Saikia, Bharat Chandra Narah, and Kamalakshya Dey Purkayastha raised questions over border disputes with neighbouring states.

BJP’s Behali MLA Ranjit Dutta requested the State Government to stop tree felling in Assam by people of Aruanchal Pradesh in certain areas even as the settlement of border disputes between the two states is underway.
