 Drive to cover around 54 lakh children

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The AADHAAR registration of newborns got started in the state from today with the issuance of some AADHAAR cards.

This drive will cover 54 lakh children of the age group of 0-6 years. The first phase of this drive is to cover ten districts. This drive is going on under the aegis of the Social Welfare department.

The inauguration of the drive was at the auditorium of the Assam Social Welfare Department Council in the presence of the Principal Secretary of the Social Welfare Department, Mukesh Sahu, Director Bibhas Modi and the Assistant Director-General of UIDAI (regional office), Kapil Jambhulkar.

Jambhulkar said, "The drive is going on with full support from the UIDAI to the State Social Welfare department. This drive does not take a child's biometrics till it attains six years of age. It only takes their photos and links their AADHAAR cards with those of their parents. The drive takes the fingerprints of children aged over five years of age.

"AADHAAR card will be a supporting document at the time of enrolling a child in school and for other purposes. I hope Assam will make this drive a success."

Social Welfare Principal Secretary Sahu said, "The AADHAAR card is a must for pan-India identification. It has provisions for the update. All should avail of its benefits."

Social Welfare Director Modi said, "The AADHAAR registration of children will go on in the Anganwadi centres. We appeal to the parents to take their wards to their nearest Anganwadi centres. We register parents for AADHAAR cards if they do not have any before the registration of their wards. This drive aims at lessening the problem of AADHAAR enrollment in rural areas. This drive will cover around 54 lakh children. However, the number of children will keep changing."
