ACADEMIC YEAR IN COVID TIMES

'Final-year students must not suffer due to lockdown compulsions'

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The universities, in consultation with the State government, should chalk out a strategy to ensure that there is no loss of academic year especially among the final semester students at the Post Graduate and Degree levels, said AASU (All Assam Students Union) here on Tuesday.

Under normal circumstances, these students appear for their respective examinations in June. The results are generally announced on August-end or the first part of September. The university and college classes have remained suspended due to the COVID-induced lockdown phases from the middle part of March. The academic lessons are yet to be completed though some online classes are being carried out.

AASU general secretaryLurinjyoti Gogoi told The Sentinel, "We have not come across any coordinated plan on this issue. It is high time that the authorities of various universities across Assam sit together and draw up a practical plan as it involves a huge number of final year or semester students at the graduate and PG levels. They will have to also consult the government since there is no official indication as to when the academic sessions will commence.

"The fight against coronavirus is going to be a long-stretched one. But, the students should not suffer due to this. Their future is at stake.

"The universities should have chalked out a well-thought out plan on the State academic session long back. However, it is still not too late for them to immediately do so in consultation with the government keeping in mind the COVID-19 guidelines."
