Guwahati: The rainfall distribution for the week ending May 21 saw both Assam and Meghalaya recording much more excessive rains than normal. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre of IMD at Guwahati, Meghalaya received 167% and Assam 55% above normal rainfall in between May 15 and May 21, 2025. The copious amounts of rainfall have eliminated the deficit gap in the two states in the pre-monsoon season.
According to an IMD report, Meghalaya received 251.2 mm of rainfall against the normal of 94 mm during the week ending May 21, which is 167% above the normal. Similarly, Assam received 98.9 mm of rainfall against the normal of 63.9 mm in the same week. This was 55% more than the normal rainfall.
The above-normal rainfall has not only closed the deficit gap of rainfall in Meghalaya but also crossed the limit to reach 18% more than normal rains. The rainfall deficit gap was also narrowed down in Assam, and this has been reduced to 14% less than the norm in the pre-monsoon season, till May 21.
In the weather report for the last 24 hours, most parts of Assam experienced rainfall, and Rattachera received 11 cm of rainfall, the highest in the state. This was followed by 10 cm of rainfall each in Gauripur and Dhubri. In Meghalaya, Mynkre received the highest of 10 cm of rain.
The forecast for Friday says thunderstorms & lightning accompanied with gusty winds reaching up to 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, with thunderstorms & lightning very likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya & Nagaland. Also, that heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya.
