GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sent a message to the Assam Police that they should not harass innocent people while acting tough against criminals.

Talking to the media here today, the Chief Minister said, "The police should always take the side of the innocent people. While acting tough against the criminals, the police should see that they don't harass any innocent people. We act tough against criminals to protect innocent citizens. If the police harass innocent people while acting against criminals, it will defeat our purpose of fighting out criminals. If anybody scolds the police, it is better for the police personnel to tolerate that. However, the police should always be tough against criminals."

When asked about the transfer of Nagaon SP Anand Mishra last night, the Chief Minister said, "He had no involvement in the recent police firing on former student leader Kirti Kamal Bora in Nagaon. The inquiry report wrote nothing against the SP. However, it does not augur well when one holds press meet and tries to play down an inquiry report."

Former student leader Kirti Kamal Bora sustained an injury in the January 22 firing by the Anti-Narcotic Squad in Nagaon. The State government instituted an inquiry into the incident with Additional Chief Secretary PK Barthakur. Following the inquiry report, the government decided to hand over the firing case to the CID, suspended an ASI and transferred the other members of the anti-narcotics squad outside the Nagaon district. Nagaon SP Anand Mishra had constituted the anti-narcotic squad of the district. SP Mishra addressed the media at Nagaon yesterday and indirectly expressed his dissatisfaction over the inquiry report.

The government transferred SP Anand Mishra last night. He reported to the Assam Police Headquarters for duty this morning.
