African Swine Fever: Now, transportation of pigs into state banned

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: After the ban on the import of poultry to the state, the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department has banned the transportation of pigs into the state from outside. The department, however, has not banned intra-district and inter-district transportation of pigs in the interest of local farmers, subject to adherence to biosecurity measures.

The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department had a meeting with the representatives of piggery and poultry associations at Janata Bhawan in Guwahati today. The department discussed the ban on the import of poultry and the transportation of pigs into the state as precautionary measures to prevent the outbreak of Avian Influenza and African Swine Fever (ASF) in the state.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, State Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Atul Bora said, “We have already issued two notifications, one for banning poultry imports and the other for banning the transportation of pigs into the state, in the interest of local poultry and pig farmers. We have taken measures to strongly implement the two notifications. We will issue SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) shortly for the two bans. The state’s farmers produce poultry and pork in bulk. Despite the ban, the state’s consumers won’t have to face scarcity of poultry and pork.”

The minister said, “We have taken up several flagship schemes to increase the local production of pork, poultry, and milk.”
