BARPETA: The Barpeta sessions judge court on Friday handed over a three-year-old child to his real mother after three years.

On March 3, 2019, a pregnant woman named Najma Khanam of Barpeta was admitted at Barpeta's Fakharuddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital (FAAMCH) and gave birth to a male child. Just after the birth of the baby, Najma Khanam was admitted in the ICU and the baby was kept in the baby room.

The next day, the hospital authority informed the father of the baby that the baby had died in the baby room and handed over the baby's body to the father. The couple did not believe it because their baby was born healthy and fit. But the hospital authority showed no consideration.

The couple then filed a case at the Barpeta Sadar Police Station against the hospital authority for inquiry.

It so happened that the day Najma Khanam was admitted to the hospital, another woman named Najma Khatun of Gossaigaon in the Bongaigaon district had brought her ailing newborn baby to the hospital. The ailing baby died that day. The hospital authority and nurse got confused and handed over the dead baby to Najma Khanam while her healthy baby was handed over to Najma Khatun.

During the pendency of the case, a DNA test was done on the baby and finally after three years, the 3-year-old child was handed over to his real mother - Najma Khanam. Due to the negligence of the hospital authority and staff, both families had to suffer. The court today reunited a mother with her child.
