AGP declares candidates for 8 LACs, denies seat to Brindaban Goswami

GUWAHATI: The AGP (Asom Gana Parishad) on Sunday declared candidates for eight LACs (Legislative Assembly Constituencies) where polls will be held in the first phase on March 27. Party president Atul Bora will contest from Bokakhat while working president Keshab Mahanta will fight for the Kaliabar seat.
The other six constituencies along with the party candidates are: Teok: Renupoma Rajkhowa; Dergaon: Bhabendra Nath Bharali; Amguri: Pradip Hazarika; Chabua: Punakon Barua; Naobaisa: Jayanta Khound; and Tezpur: Prithviraj Rabha.
Mentionably, the AGP denied party ticket to Brindaban Goswami – one of the founder leaders of the party. Goswami is sitting MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) representing Tezpur. He was also the Education Minister in the first Cabinet of the then Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. Sources informed that there is a possibility of Goswami contesting from Tezpur.
Mentionably, Prithviraj is son of Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha. He joined the AGP at the party headquarters, Ambari here in the afternoon in the presence of senior leaders of the party.
In another development during the day, AIUDF (ALL India United Democratic Front) MLA from Karimganj South – Aziz Khan also joined the AGP at the same function.
Meanwhile, Kamalpur MLA and one of the general secretaries of AGP — Satyabrata Kalita resigned from the AGP in a late night development on Saturday. This development took place after the AGP handed over the Kamalpur Constituency to the BJP during the seat-sharing adjustments between the two allied partners.
The AGP will declare its candidates for the second and third phases later, added sources.
