Guwahati, Feb 24: An embarassed Assam Higher Secondary Education Council today cancelled the physics examition after it confirmed that the question paper was leaked.

Officials admit that it is the first such case of higher secondary question paper leak in the State.

The news of the question paper leak spread at around 10 in the morning. The examition was slated for 1.30 in the afternoon.

“After the news spread, officials from the council cross-checked it and confirmed that the paper circulated through WhatsApp was similar to the actual question paper. We then decided to cancel the examition. The Education department has asked the deputy commissioners of Dhubri and Mankachar-South Salmara to inquire into the incident, as prima facie it appeared that the paper was leaked at Hatsingimari,” Education minister Sarat Borkataky said.

The entire 16-page question paper was being circulated through social networking sites.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that if required, the government would conduct an inquiry through the CID.

The AHSEC has initiated a separate inquiry through a committee comprising a council member and a deputy secretary.

Generally, the question papers are kept at police stations or at government treasuries before being taken to the examition centers on the day of examition.

The physics examition will now be held on March 17 at 9 am.

The All Assam Students Union has slammed the government for the incident, alleging that it is “playing with the future of students”. “The higher secondary examition is a crucial examition for a student. We condemn the lackadaisical attitude of the government in handling the conduct of the examition,” the AASU said.

The higher secondary examition commenced on February 15. Science students have already appeared for three papers, including English, Mathematics and Biotechnology.
