All Assam Students' Union raps 'ill- prepared' Government on school closure

GUWAHATI: The AASU (All Assam Students' Union) has raised the question of an alternative mode of education in districts where classes have been asked to be closed from class I to class V with effect from Monday.

The State Education department has ordered the deputy commissioners of districts where COVID-19 positive cases have crossed the 100 mark to close primary schools.

Talking to The Sentinel, AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath said, "As a precautionary measure the government has ordered closure of primary schools. Safety of kids and their parents should be accorded top-most priority. We've nothing to say on that, but what about their education? Does the government have any alternative mode of education?

"From March, 2020 the students missed their classes for the entire year. Their education suffered a lot. Virtual learning isn't feasible for primary school students.

"The government hasn't learnt any lesson from the 2020 pandemic. It hasn't thought of any alternative mode of education in the event of rerun of COVID-19 in the State. It hasn't built school infrastructure for alternative mode of education. As if to cap it all, internet connectivity is very poor in rural areas in the State.

"The government engaged itself in election-oriented popular schemes instead of developing educational infrastructure for alternative mode of education. The government will have to take the responsibility for the loss being suffered by the students."
