Rome: Robert Prevost has been elected as the new Pope, with the trademark white smoke billowing out of the chimney high above St Peter's Square on Thursday to signify the conclave of the Cardinals has made its choice to select Pope Francis' successor. Robert Prevost is the first American to hold this post. Joy erupted among the clergy, and all eyes are on the balcony, awaiting the first appearance of the new head of the Roman Catholic Church.
Prevost was spent his career ministering in Peru and leads the Vatican's powerful office of bishops. His election makes him the first American pope in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church.
Prevost, 69, comes from Chicago. Prevost did missionary work in Peru and led a Vatican office for vetting bishops. He was the bishop of Chiclayo from 2014 to 2023; notably, he added three women to the voting bloc for bishops. His election is remarkable, since Americans have not been elected pope in recent years because of the country's geopolitical power. (IANS)
