GUWAHATI: The Assam Government is making every effort to give Majuli, the world's largest river island, the global recognition that it deserves. While previous attempts to get Majuli the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site tag have not yielded the desired result, this time the Centre and the Assam Government are trying to get it included under the 'natural'category of the World Heritage Site list.
According to sources, the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Assam, prepared a dossier justifying the inclusion of Majuli in the World Heritage Site-Natural list. The dossier was sent to the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The Ministry of Culture studied the dossier and being satisfied with the justification, recently forwarded the dossier to the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
The Ministry of Culture had earlier forwarded a draft dossier to the UNESCO headquarters for inclusion of the Charaideo Maidams in the World Heritage list. This draft dossier had been prepared by the Directorate of Archaeology.
A World Heritage Site is a landmark or area which is selected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as having cultural, historical, scientific or other form of significance, and is legally protected by international treaties. The sites are judged important to the collective interests of humanity.
