GUWAHATI: Even as the Special Investigation Team (SIT) conducting operations in the cash-for-job scam continued their drive against tainted officers, there are reports that many are on the run and evading arrest.

Following the arrest of two ASPs on Wednesday in connection with the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) scam, the SIT is bringing many more officers into the ambit of the investigation and conducted an operation last night to apprehend several more, sources revealed. The team is confident that many more will fall into its net soon, even as efforts were taken to intensify the operation into the cash-for-job scam, an investigation into which has resulted in new facts emerging recently, sources said.

It should be mentioned here that 37 ACS and allied services officers were indicted in the report by the Justice Biplab Sharma Judicial Inquiry Commission. The officers are featured in a list connected to the CCE (Combined Competitive Examinations) 2013.

Meanwhile, the SIT on Thursday prayed for permission from the special court to collect the handwriting samples of the two arrested ASPs, Aishwarya Jibon Baruah and Shahjahan Sarkar. Once collected, the samples would be sent to the Forensic Laboratory for detailed analysis, a source said.

In a related development, Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh said in a post on ‘X’ that Wednesday night’s blast in Tinsukia district is an attempt by miscreants and organizations to draw the attention of senior police officers away from the renewed police action on the APSC scam.

GP Singh wrote in the post, “It is a strange coincidence that the day Assam Government and @assampolice starts taking revitalized action on APSC scam, there is a minor blast by miscreants in Tinsukia district of Assam. This looks like an attempt to draw attention of senior leadership of police away from APSC Scam investigation. Such miscreants and organizations would always try to stifle efforts to improve Assam. We would identify and punish perpetrators of this, and all such attempts that are made to divert our attention from improve our state. We remain committed to reach the bottom of the scam and punish all who are involved in it.”

On Wednesday evening, a grenade was exploded outside the gates of an Army camp in Tinsukia district. However, the police said there was no report of any casualties. The blast was reported to have taken place in front of the gates of an Army camp in Dirak on Wednesday evening, the official said.
