GUWAHATI: Around 8.21 lakh teenagers in the age group of 15-18 years have received COVID vaccine jabs so far in Assam. The Assam Government, which rolled out the vaccination drive for teens on January 3, 2022, has set a target of vaccinating 20 lakh teenagers with both doses by March so that they can appear for the offline board and other exams.

Meanwhile, a total of 90,459 people had taken the booster dose (third dose) of COVID-19 till Thursday. "People are coming forward to take the booster dose and we have a sufficient number of vaccine doses available," said Health Department sources. Over 4 crore doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered so far in Assam.

Sources added that the vaccination drive for teens had not picked up pace due to various factors. "Some teenagers are not studying in schools and colleges. They are not coming forward to take the vaccine," said sources.

On the other hand, there has been a surge in COVID-19 cases in the last 10 days. Kamrup (metro) district recorded the highest number of cases in the last 10 days – 12,911. Cachar recorded 3,061 cases, Dibrugarh 3,053 cases, Jorhat 2,771 cases, Kamrup district 2,261 cases, and Tinsukia 2,185 cases.

Sources said that the third wave of the pandemic has taken a worrisome turn in 16 districts of the State. The government has intensified testing in these districts. "The problem is that people are not willing to come forward for COVID testing," said sources.
