BARPETA: Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora on Friday announced that the party will launch a membership drive named 'Swagat Satirtha Abhiyan' on Saturday to infuse new blood by enrolling 25 lakh new members.

Addressing the 38the Foundation Day of AGP, which was observed at the Barpeta municipality field, Bora said, "It is not just the foundation day of a political party, it is the establishment day of self-respect for the people of Assam. The AGP team, which has served for the sake of race and land with the ideology of regionalism, has entered 38 glorious years today. This team has been working for the welfare by carrying the melody of soil in their hearts for the last three decades by uniting the people of hills and plains. Let the journey of AGP be far-spreading and public-oriented by the ideology of regionalism."

The event started with hoisting of the AGP flag of by Atul Bora. It was followed by felicitation of martyrs' families by Bora and other AGP leaders.

In the open session, Bora said that AGP is the only regional political party and urged people to come forward and make it stronger for the safety of Assam.

The AGP president said that the Congress will be uprooted in the next Lok Sabha elections. He added that the AGP will try to win those constituencies where there is no alliance with the BJP, especially the Barpeta seat.

The programme, which saw the participation of thousands of AGP members from various parts of the state, was also attended by Keshab Mahanta, Birendra Prasad Baishya, Kumar Deepak Das, Phanibhushan Choudhury, Bhupen Roy, Nurul Islam, Gunindra Nath Das, Dr Tara Prasad Das and Satyabrata Kalita, among others.
