Bokakhat: Director General of Police (DGP) Harmeet Singh today revealed that five to seven people were involved in the recent grenade explosion at Bokakhat, and three of them have already been arrested.
Addressing the media at the police guest house in Kohora, Kaziranga today, the DGP said that the two main accused directly involved in the incident are Rupjyoti Das and Ankur Das, both residents of Adarsha Gaon, Panbari. Rupjyoti Das, who had been absconding, was arrested from outside the state, while Ankur Das is still at large.
The incident took place on the night of June 24 at around 8 pm at a police battalion outpost located on the premises of the Panbari Agricultural Farm in the Kaziranga area. The grenade explosion injured three police personnel. Immediately after the blast, the police launched an investigation, seized a motorcycle, and identified two youths directly involved in the incident.
The DGP further stated that two more individuals involved in the conspiracy have been arrested - Sanjeev Baruah from Lakhimpur and Bhavesh Kalita from Tezpur. He also stated that the police confiscated a pistol and a grenade from Lakhimpur, as well as another grenade from Tezpur.
According to DGP Singh, these weapons were supplied with the intent to attack central government forces or security personnel. The arrested suspects have confessed to their involvement in the June 24 incident, and the police now have a clear understanding of the case. He mentioned that the real investigation starts now, following these arrests.
The DGP emphasised that, as per the commitment of the Chief Minister, no harm will be allowed to befall citizens or security forces in the state. "We are fully prepared. No person involved in such crimes will be spared. We will take every legal step necessary," he stated.
Though the Golaghat Superintendent of Police and the Chief Minister have already disclosed the possible motive behind the attack, the DGP refrained from revealing specific details, saying, "We know everything about why the attack was carried out, but for the sake of the ongoing investigation, we will not disclose it yet. Once the investigation is complete, all facts will be made public."
The DGP also said that others involved in the incident will soon be apprehended and that appropriate legal action will be taken against the perpetrators. Saying that the police operation is ongoing, he affirmed, "We will not allow Assam to be harmed."
