Guwahati: According to the latest information from the Assam State Election Commission, there will be a total of 6,301 candidates contesting for members in Zilla Parishads (ZPs) and Anchalik Panchayats (APs) in the upcoming panchayat election 2025. Until the deadline of Thursday afternoon, as many as 385 candidates withdrew their nomination papers.

However, several candidates won uncontested in the panchayat poll, mostly from the BJP and AGP. Of the 397 ZP members, the NDA coalition partner BJP, won 35 seats and AGP 2 seats uncontested. Out of 2,192 AP members, BJP won 259 seats and AGP 29 seats without any contest.

Meanwhile, the INC won 9 uncontested AP member seats, the AIUDF 1 seat and independents 13 seats.

Significantly, in the Naduar legislative assembly constituency in the Sonitpur district, the BJP bagged uncontested all four ZP member and 19 AP member seats.

In this year’s panchayat election, the elections for members of ZP and AP are political contests, but the election for members of Gaon Panchayat will be apolitical. Candidates contesting for members of Gaon Panchayat (GP) will not be able to use any political party symbol but free symbols allotted to the candidates by the Assam State Election Commission. Every GP will have 10 members.

Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma took to his X handle to say, “Yesterday marked the last date for withdrawal of nominations for the upcoming Panchayat elections. As per reports received so far, the NDA has already secured 37 Zila Parishad (35 BJP and 2 AGP) and 288 Anchalik Panchayat (259 BJP and 29 AGP) seats unopposed. This is a massive and unprecedented mandate in Assam’s political history. It reflects the immense trust and overwhelming love that the people of Assam have for the NDA and for our Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji. We are confident that when the final election results are declared, this tally will grow even more impressive. The NDA is all set to sweep the Panchayat elections in Assam.”

Voting for the Assam panchayat election 2025 will be held in two phases—on May 2 and 7, 2025. The voting time has been fixed for 7.30 am to 4.30 pm.
