GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the BJP-led NDA performed much better than before in its traditional bastions, besides performing significantly better in minority-dominated areas where it had no grip at all in the past.

The Chief Minister made this known before the media today when the party was celebrating its landslide victory in the just-concluded panchayat poll in the state.

The Chief Minister said that the ruling alliance won around 300 of the 397 zilla parishad constituencies (76.27 per cent against 55 per cent in the last panchayat poll) in the state as of now as per the reports received from the district offices.

In the case of anchalik panchayat seats, the ruling alliance won 1436 of the 2192 seats (66 per cent against 52 per cent in the last panchayat poll) in the state so far, he said. On the contrary, the Congress won only 18 per cent of ZP seats and 21 per cent of AP seats so far, he said.

The Chief Minister said that the Congress faced defeats in more than 50 per cent of seats in ZP and AP compared to the last panchayat poll.

The Chief Minister said that a significant shift in upper Assam is that the NDA candidates almost whitewashed the Congress, receiving votes from all castes and communities. “We’ve won three seats that have around 90 per cent minority populations. In other minority-dominated seats we faced defeats with respect by securing around 35 per cent of the votes. This is a good sign for the NDA,” the Chief Minister said.

The results of this panchayat poll made the Chief Minister guess that the ruling alliance will take the lead in around 103 constituencies in the 2026 Assembly election in the state. “In the run-up to the panchayat poll, the ruling coalition only gave assurances to the voters. Just think of what support the ruling coalition will garner in the Assembly poll that it will fight after translating all these assurances into reality. For instance, 30 lakh women will get Rs 10,000 each under the Mukhya Mantrir Mahila Udyomita Asoni, several lakh new beneficiaries will be included in the Orunodoi scheme, and there will be a reduction of LPG prices, a reduction of power tariffs, etc.,” he said.

On the secrets of success of the ruling alliance in the panchayat poll, the Chief Minister said, “The alliance of the ruling parties was quite compact, with a transparent selection of candidates and a vigorous campaign. Union ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Pabitra Margherita, all MPs, ministers, MLAs and others were on the campaign trail in the state. Our duty now is to keep an eagle’s eye from the word go and not allow any corrupt practice in the implementation of schemes in panchayat areas.”

Giving details of the ZP results declared so far, the Chief Minister said, “The ruling alliance won all the 22 seats in Dibrugarh, all the 20 in Sonitpur, 11 of the 12 seats in Sivasagar, all the 12 seats in Dhemaji, all the 20 seats in Golaghat, all the eight seats in Charaideo, all the 12 seats in Biswanath, all the six seats in Guwahati, all the 16 seats in Jorhat, all the eight seats in Kaliabor, 13 of the 15 seats in Lakhimpur, 11 of the 12 seats in Nalbari, 11 of the 19 seats in Nagaon, 3 of the eight seats in Hailakandi, seven of the eight seats in Hojai, 3 of the 12 seats in Dhubri, seven of the 19 seats in Barpeta, two of the four seats in Bilasipara, 16 of the 25 seats in Cachar, seven of the 12 seats in Darrang, ten of the 16 seats in Goalpara, eight of the 12 seats in Bongaigaon, four of the five seats in Bajali etc.”
