Assam-Arunachal border: Joint visit from August 20

GUWAHATI: The Namsai Declaration reduced the number of disputed villages between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to 86 from 122. Now the Assam government has categorized them as low-intensity-dispute villages and high-intensity-dispute villages. The Assam Government is hopeful of resolving the high-intensity-dispute villages, let alone the low-intensity-dispute ones.

According to Border Protection and Development Department sources, the 70 high-intensity-dispute villages are in Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Biswanath districts, and the low-intensity-dispute villages are in Udalguri, Sonitpur, Dibrugarh, Charaideo and Tinsukia districts.

The recent meeting of the 12 regional committees of Assam chaired by Border Protection Minister Atul Bora decided to complete the joint visit of the disputed villages by August 31, 2022. According to official sources, the joint visit of the disputed villages with the Arunachal Pradesh regional committees will start on August 20 and be complete by August 31. And the regional committees of Assam will submit their reports to the Chief Minister by September 15.

Talking to The Sentinel, Border Protection and Development Commissioner and Secretary GD Tripathi said, "It is because of the sincere efforts from our Chief Minister that both the states are going ahead positively to resolve the boundary disputes."
