GUWAHATI: A section of private schools in Assam that are not affiliated with the Assam State Secondary Education Board (ASSEB) have been facing a serious crisis following the Education Department’s order to the heads of institutions not to register students from such non-affiliated private schools in classes IX and XI.
A practice prevalent in the state is that a section of non-affiliated private schools registers their students of Class IX and Class XI in some government and provincialised schools to let their students appear in the HSLC (High School Leaving Certificate) and HS final examinations.
The letter that the Education Department sent to the school heads through their respective inspectors of schools instructed the school authorities not to register any outside students who are not studying in their schools.
The letter said, “A number of private schools that are not affiliated with the ASSEB and that do not possess valid UDISE codes have been registering their students in Class IX through government or provincialised schools. However, these students are not actual attendees of the schools where they are being registered and therefore can be classified as fake students of the registering institutions. Such activities have created problems in monitoring the performance of government and provincialised schools.”
The letter further said, “You are, hereby, instructed not to register any outside students who are not bona fide and regular students of your schools.”
The mushroom growth of private schools in the state has created this problem. Now, the students and their guardians of such non-affiliated private schools have no door to knock at. The students and their guardians have to face this problem, as the government has no mechanism to keep tabs on the mushroom growth of private schools in the state. Such private schools lure guardians by promising them imparting quality to their wards.
According to sources, one of the reasons behind most government and provincialised schools registering poor pass percentages in HSLC and HS final year examinations is the poor results of the students of non-affiliated private schools.
