Assam Assembly: MLAs spar over child marriage

GUWAHATI: Noisy scenes were witnessed today in the House during Question Hour over the State Government's crackdown on child marriage. All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLAs said that the action taken by the government against child marriages was not according to law. The crackdown against child marriage had affected the social life of many people, claimed the AIUDF MLAs.

On the other hand, the MLAs of the ruling alliance said that the AIUDF MLAs were speaking in favour of child marriage for the sake of vote-bank politics. The MLAs said that child marriage was the reason for the high infant and maternal mortality rates in Assam. They added that the government had acted according to law.
