Silchar: Tension gripped the Indo-Bangladesh border at Sribhumi’s Sutarkandi as thousands of members and supporters of the Sanatani Oikyamancha marched towards the neighbouring country in protest against the systemic torture of the Hindus.

On Sunday, at least 20 thousand supporters gathered at Ulukandi, just 500 metres from the Sutarkandi border, and tried to cross the barbed fence. Despite the police and CRPF barricades, the protestors marched forward, breaking through two barriers. However, they were stopped by the BSF as the security force posted the ultimate barricade just 200 metres from the border. At one point, the irate protesters got involved in a brawl with the BSF, resulting in a chaotic situation at the border.

The police resorted to a baton charge to disperse the crowd. However, the crowd pushed back against the forces chanting ‘Jai Sri Ram.’ A few people on both sides were injured in the standoff. The authorities had deployed additional forces on the border. The Sanatani Oikyamanch, on the other hand, declared that they would continue their protest until the Hindu religious leader Chinmoy Prabhu, who was arrested in Dhaka on charges of treason, was released.
