GUWAHATI: The rescue team fished out the body of one of the nine trapped workers, Ganga Bahadur Shresth, hailing from Nepal, from the flooded coal mine in Umrangshu in the Dima Hasao district today.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Twenty-one para drivers have recovered a lifeless body from the bottom of the well. Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving families.”
The rescue operation was going on from the morning. The dewatering of the mine has been going on with the help of heavy-duty motor pumps and local dewatering pumps. Rescuers from the Army, Navy, and NDRF have been continuing their search for the remaining eight workers.
Meanwhile, the Asom Jatiya Parishad and the Congress have raised the demand for a high-level inquiry into the legalities of rat-hole mining that was banned by the Supreme Court and the NGT (National Green Tribunal).
