Guwahati, June 16: At a time when questions are being raised about the competitive abilities of students passing out under State education boards in Assam, Rinku Sarmah has cracked the AIIMS MBBS entrance exam by securing 8th position in all-India rankings.

Rinku who passed Class X fil exam under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) two years back, preferred to pursue Plus II courses under the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC). Accordingly, he took admission in Sai Vikas Junior College in Guwahati to study in the HS Science stream.

“My son opted to pursue Plus II under the State board because the Plus II fil exam under this board finishes earlier than the CBSE. Since the fil exam finished early (by first week of March), he got almost two months time to study intensively and revise for the AIIMS MBBS entrance exam. He would not have gotten this opportunity under the CBSE. Rinku found the syllabus of Assam Higher Secondary Education Council absolutely perfect and competitive. He rather told me that the State board’s syllabus is more in-depth in content,” an elated Rita Devi, Rinku’s mother, told The Sentinel on Friday afternoon.

AIIMS MBBS entrance exam is one of the most grueling and competitive exams for students aspiring to pursue medicine and surgery as their future career in AIIMS. It is much tougher than the AIPMT exam.

Students cracking the AIPMT exam have wider scope to take admission such as 15 per cent all-India quota seats in medical and dental colleges across the country as well as 85 per cent State quota seats for participating States, universities and institutions.

The scope of the AIIMS entrance exam is much rrower. Around 1 lakh students appeared for AIIMS MBBS 2017 entrance exam through offline and online mode for 672 seats in 7 AIIMS-like institutions across India (including 72 MBBS seats in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi). The other institutes in which students who cleared the AIIMS entrance exam this year will get admission are the new AIIMS in Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Pat, Raipur and Rishikesh – all of which have 100 MBBS seats each.

Rinku who did his schooling from Sainik School, Goalpara said he does not believe there is a difference between brilliant students from the State board or Central board. “Brilliant students are brilliant everywhere. They can compete and excel everywhere and in any exam,” he said.

Rinku who never opted for private tuition and secured above 90 percent marks both in Class X and XII exams, said regular and in-depth study are keys to do well in any exam. Inspired by ideals followed by his father Dr Atul Sarmah, Rinku said he wants to serve humanity by becoming a doctor.

Candidates successful in the AIIMS entrance exam will join AIIMS and study for a five-and-a-half year programme for bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery (MBBS) degree, including one year of compulsory internship.
