GUWAHATI: The budgetary expenditure during the financial year 2024-25 has touched 86 per cent, compared to 80 per cent in fiscal 2023-24.

According to state Finance Minister Ajanta Neog, this will be considered a success of the state government.

“On March 31, the financial year 2024-25 ended. We’re able to spend 86 per cent of the approved funds of the budget. It’s worth Rs 1.45 lakh crore. We also spent Rs 25,354 crore as capital expenditure compared to Rs 21,509 crore in 2023-24,” she said, adding, “The budgetary expenditure in 2015-16 was 63 per cent (Rs 41,931 crore), and the capital expenditure was Rs 2,951 crore.”

Neog said that for decades Assam’s progress remained stagnant, highlighting a stark contrast with the rapid development seen across the country. To change this, restoring a culture of dedication and efficiency was imperative. “Under the progressive leadership of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, we have successfully reunited this spirit. As a result of our persistent hard work, the size of Assam’s budget and utilisation has consistently increased. I congratulate the Chief Minister, ministerial colleagues and officers of the Finance Department for this success,” she said.

In her budget speech recently, Neog said, “The increase of budgetary expenditure by 250 per cent in less than ten years is perhaps one of its kinds in our nation’s fiscal history. Assam’s economic growth has ascended to new heights that are reflected in the state’s domestic products as well as per capita income. In the financial year 2023-24, Assam recorded a growth of 19 per cent in GSDP and 17 per cent in per capita income, making it one of the fastest growing states in the country.”
