GUWAHATI: The Assam Cabinet today approved the 'Assam Health System Strengthening Project' under which the government will set up super specialty hospitals and district hospitals funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). JICA has extended financial assistance of Rs 3,800 crore to the Assam Government for the purpose.

Under the 'Assam Health System Strengthening Project', six super specialty hospitals will be constructed in six medical colleges across the State, except Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH). In addition, six district hospitals will come up in the districts where there are no medical colleges. These are Silchar, Udalguri, Hojai, Hailakandi, Darrang and Dima Hasao.

Under this project, all the health department directorates in Guwahati will come under one campus titled Swastha Bhavan. The Hospital Information System will also be updated. Work under this project will start from the current financial year.

The Cabinet also approved the system to disburse the salary of the contractual teachers of HS schools without ceiling. This has been done to ensure that the salary disbursal of the contractual teachers becomes smooth.
