GUWAHATI: The state cabinet today decided to notify Sikhna Jwhwlao forest located in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts as a national park. With this, Assam will have eight national parks. The area of this national park is 316 sq. km.
Speaking to the media after the Cabinet meeting at Dispur today, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Assam has seven national parks. With today’s decision, the state will have eight national parks. Assam is now next to only Madhya Pradesh insofar as the number of national parks is concerned. This national park is located between the Manas National Park and the Raimona National Park.”
The cabinet has decided to increase the number of members in the Tiwa Autonomous Council (TAC) to 42 from 36.
The Cabinet also took the decision to hold the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) poll in April this year and the elections of Mising Autonomous Council, Thengal Kachari Autonomous Council, Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council, Deuri Autonomous Council, and Bodo Kachari Welfare Autonomous Council elections in September this year.
Apart from these, the Cabinet approved the setting up of a private university—Swami Vivekananda University—in the BTR.
The Cabinet approved the creation of new budget heads for the newly created departments—the Barak Valley Department, the Department of Innovation, Incubation, and Startup, and the Department of Tea Tribes and Adivasi Welfare.
The cabinet approved the ‘Assam Integrated Clean Energy Policy-2025,’ the setting up of a 250-MW solar park in Karbi Anglong with financial aid from ADB, an industrial park each at Sonapur and Dimoria, and a mega industrial park at a 569-bigha site between Jagiroad and Raha in the Morigaon district – to boost the industrialization efforts in the state.
