Guwahati: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is confident that the social evil of child marriage will disappear in Assam by 2026. The CM stated this today after the latest drive against child marriage by Assam Police.
Talking to the media, the CM said, “When I took over responsibility of the state in 2021, I made a commitment in my first speech on Independence Day that child marriage will be rooted out in Assam by 2026. In our first drive against child marriage, around 5,000 people involved in child marriage were arrested. After that drive, the number of child marriages came down somewhat. In the second such drive, around 2,000 people were arrested. We started another drive since last night, and those involved in child marriage were arrested.”
He further said, “On one hand we are taking a tough stance against those involved in child marriage. On the other hand, girls are now covered under the Nijut Moina scheme and a few other schemes, so they are now more interested in studying. I believe that we will be successful in ending the menace of child marriage by 2026.”
