Assam: Cost of Jorhat-Majuli bridge escalates to nearly Rs 1280 crore

Guwahati: The delay in the construction of Jorhat-Majuli bridge has pushed up the total cost of the project by Rs 354.41 crore. The total cost of the project has now been revised to Rs 1279.88 crore, and the revised estimate has been submitted to the central government.

Work on the bridge came to a halt in September 2024 after innumerable delays. The UP State Bridge Corporation Ltd finally withdrew from the construction work in December 2024.

The implementing agencies-state PWD and Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH)-prepared a revised estimate for the balance of work on the project.

In response to a question by MLA Bharat Chandra Narah in the state Assembly, CM and PWD Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that 30.65% of the work on the Jorhat-Majuli bridge project has been completed. So far, an expenditure of Rs 280.66 crore has been incurred. The original sanctioned amount for the project was Rs 925.47 crore. This has now been revised to Rs 1279.88 crore, and the revised estimate has been sent to the Government of India.

Work on the bridge was started in the last part of 2021, and the original scheduled date of completion was towards the end of 2025. The construction work on the Jorhat-Majuli bridge project came to a complete halt in September 2024.
