Assam COVID toll rises to 11 with the death of a 45-year-old person

GUWAHATI: The Assam toll in COVID-19 on Sunday rose to 11 with the death of a 45-year-old person identified as Hemanga Majumdar of Khanapara in the GMCH.

"He was brought to the hospital in a critical state and could not be saved," tweeted Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

GMCH Superintendent Dr Abhijit Sharma said that Majumdar was brought to the hospital on Saturday evening with severe respiratory distress. Dr Sharma added that the patient was also in "septic shock" as he was suffering from septicemia. "Doctors responded immediately and gave emergency treatment. But the patient collapsed when he was being shifted to a ward on Saturday evening," he pointed out. The GMCH authority had conducted COVID test on Hemanga after his death at the request of the family members. Hemanga was tested COVID positive on Sunday. His body is being kept at the morgue of GMCH.

While total number of COVID positive cases has risen to 7,492, as many as 234 patients were discharged from hospitals on Sunday after they were tested COVID negative. With Sunday's discharge the total number of discharged patients has reached 5088. The total number of active cases is now 2,390. On Sunday evening, the Health Minister also tweeted that the State has so far conducted 3,85,299 COVID tests.
