GUWAHATI: The economic offence rate in Assam in 2020 is 28.4 per lakh. It is much above the national average rate of 10.8 per lakh. And Assam is next to only Telangana. The southern state has an economic offence rate of 34.6 per lakh in 2020. The recently published report of the NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau) said this.

In stark contrast, the rates of economic offences of the other states of the Northeast are much below the national average. While Manipur recorded an economic offence rate of 4.9 per lakh, Meghalaya recorded 10.6 per lakh, Mizoram recorded 10.4 per lakh, Nagaland recorded 4.6 per lakh, Triputra recorded 5.1 per lakh, and Sikkim recorded 6.4 per lakh.

In 2020 a total of 9884 economic offence cases got recorded in Assam, the break-up being 2284 criminal breach of trust cases (Section 406 to 409 IPC); 63 counterfeiting cases (Section 231-243, 255 and 489A to 489 E IPC); and 7537 cases of forgery, cheating and fraud (Section 420, 465, 468, 471, 231-243, 255 and 489A to 489E IPC).
