Guwahati: The state Education Minister Ranoj Pegu announced on Friday that 35 new model Bodo medium high schools, on the lines of the tea garden model schools, would be set up in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) soon, while giving several other important assurances related to Bodo medium education.

The announcement was made after a discussion held between the Education minister and All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) on issues related to the development of Bodo medium education.

Talking to The Sentinel post the discussion, ABSU president Dipen Boro said, “Today’s discussion centred on matters that had been resolved but not implemented. We were earlier assured that 101 Bodo medium high schools would be upgraded to higher secondary schools, with the creation of posts. The Education minister today committed to creating teaching posts for 54 upgraded higher secondary schools. He also assured us that 35 new model Bodo medium high schools, on the lines of the tea garden model schools, would be established in BTR. He stated that the Karendranath Basumatary campus of Bodoland University at Udalguri will be established, with 5 departments opening from the 2025-26 session. Appointment of Bodo academic officer in ASSEB, SCERT; special TET for Bodo medium in Assam and BTR to address shortage of qualified teachers; post creation in Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS) schools of Sonitpur and Biswanath district; and school provincialisation as per BTR accord through cabinet sub-committee are the other assurances given by the minister during our discussion today, which was fruitful to some extent as several issues were resolved.”

A few of the other assurances given by the Education minister include the posting of inspectors of schools in Kokrajhar and Udalguri districts, the inclusion of Bodo language in the Assam Judicial Service grade-III examination, and the timely distribution of textbooks for the 2025-26 academic session.
