Guwahati: The Assam State Election Commission (ASEC) is gearing up for the elections to the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC). An expenditure cap for election campaigns has been fixed at Rs 10 lakh for each candidate per constituency.
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier hinted that the BTC election will be held in September, before the advent of Durga Puja this year. ASEC has issued a notification regarding the ceiling on the expenditure by candidates in the upcoming elections.
The notification states that it is mandatory to fix the ceiling of expenditure of contesting candidates for elections to the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly under Section 77(3) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Therefore, it is desirable to fix a ceiling for expenditure of contesting candidates for elections to the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) as well.
It is noted that the ceiling of expenditure for a candidate contesting in a BTC Constituency in 2020 was fixed at Rs. 7 (seven) lakh per candidate per constituency;
Now, after taking into consideration the general increase in prices and the number of electors, the ASEC has fixed the maximum limit of expenditure at Rs 10 (ten) lakh per candidate per constituency in connection with the BTC Election, 2025.
Currently, revision of the photo electoral roll is underway for the forthcoming BTC elections. The final electoral roll is scheduled to come out on August 18, 2025. This will be the last major election before the Assam Assembly election in 2026. There are 40 constituencies under the BTC.
