GUWAHATI: Taking into consideration the devastation caused by floods in Assam this season, the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has urged the Centre to announce a special financial package for restoration and rebuilding works. The AASU has also urged the Centre to declare the perennial problem of floods in Assam as a national problem.

Talking to The Sentinel, AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath said, "The AASU visited several flood-ravaged districts. Floods this season have left behind a trail of devastation and destruction. Public as well as private properties have been destroyed. In the Darrang district, the river course changed due to which many people were unexpectedly confronted with untold miseries and sufferings. Excess water also flowed down from Bhutan which added to the flood woes of the people of lower Assam.

"The resources of the State Government will not be sufficient to carry out restoration and rebuilding works. Roads, bridges and embankments have been damaged. The connectivity of some villages with mainstream areas has been snapped. When other states are hit by floods, the Centre declares financial packages for those states. But this has not happened in the case of Assam.

"The AASU urges the Centre to announce a special financial package for Assam and to declare the State's endemic flood problem as a national problem."
