Assam floods: Flood toll rises to seven in Goalpara district

GUWAHATI: The toll in the first spate of pre-monsoon floods in Assam rose to seven with one more death reported from Matia in Goalpara district on Sunday. The affected persons are 2,52, 150 people of 293 villages and localities under seven Revenue Circles across the three districts of Goalpara, Nagaon, and Hojai, stated a release of ASDMA (Assam State Disaster Management Authority).

Though the major rivers showed a receding pattern, the Kopili, however, flowed above the danger level at Kampur and Dharamtul in Nagaon district.

Altogether 10,249 people are taking shelter in relief camps and centres with the highest number of 7,082 in Goalpara; followed by 3,167 in Hojai.

While five houses have been damaged in Hojai district, one suffered partial damage. The affected crop area is 25, 044. 50 hectares.

Erosion has been reported from Udalguri and also Dibrugarh, where 510 people have been affected. Embankments have been breached at Udalguri and Karimganj, roads submerged in Nagaon and Barpeta, bridge and culvert damaged by the rising water of Dhirai River in Sonitpur.
