GUWAHATI: Besides expressing concern over the flood situation in Assam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today assured the state of full central support for relief and rehabilitation efforts.

Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda expressed concern over floods in Assam.

Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Prime Minister called him to enquire about the current flood situation in the state. “I briefed him how continuous rainfall in Assam and the adjoining states has led to floods and impacted human lives. I also apprised him of the relief operations undertaken by the state government. On behalf of the people of Assam, we will be grateful for his guidance and support,” he said.

Meanwhile, there has been no let-up in the flood situation in the state today. Several rivers have been flowing above the danger level. Over five lakh people from 1,250 villages in 21 districts in the state have been affected by floods. With the death of six people in the past 24 hours, the death toll in this wave of flood has risen to 12. Taking the natural calamity seriously, the Chief Minister visited the Lakhimpur district yesterday and is visiting the Cachar district today. On June 4, he is going to visit the Dima Hasao district to review the flood situation in the hill district.

Even as rainfall has decreased in Assam, due to incessant rains in Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, the situation is still critical in the state. The release of excess waters by the Ranganadi and the Karbi Langpi power plants has worsened the situation in their nearby areas.

The state government has instructed NEEPCO that it should release excess waters gradually in phases rather than releasing all at once. The government directed the officials of NEEPCO to maintain coordination with the district administrations for timely public alerts. The government has also mandated NEEPCO to take immediate precautionary actions based on the rainfall forecast.

The floods have already damaged infrastructures like roads, bridges, ring bunds, and embankments in the state, besides making over 32,000 people render in relief camps.
