Guwahati: In a recent notification issued by the Gauhati High Court, in supersession of all earlier notifications and orders of the Registry, a division bench has been named to preside over the Special Bench monitoring the disposal of pending criminal cases involving MPs and MLAs.

Through the notification dated July 23, 2025, in supersession of all earlier notifications and orders of the Registry, the Chief Justice of the Gauhati HC constituted a Division Bench comprising Justice Devashis Baruch and Justice Arun Dev Choudhury to preside over the Special Bench for the purpose of monitoring the process of expeditious disposal of pending criminal cases involving sitting/former legislators (MPs and MLAs). It was mentioned that this notification shall come into force with immediate effect.

It needs to be mentioned that, in a statement showing the number of criminal cases against MPs and MLAs in Assam for the month of June, 2025, the Gauhati HC stated that a total of 70 cases were pending under the jurisdiction of the HC till the end of the month. Further, that the data excluded cases from the courts of Special Judges.
