GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has taken a policy decision to give land settlement to indigenous landless families under the Mega Mission of the State Revenue and Disaster Management Department.
Recently, the government accorded approval to 760 proposals for land settlement submitted by the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) of various districts of the State. The State Revenue and Disaster Management Department issued a notification regarding settlement of land in favour of indigenous people under Mega Mission.
The notification stated that 760 indigenous families in 16 districts of the State would be given land settlement. These include 22 families in the Dhubri district, 145 in Dhemaji, 2 in Goalpara, 28 in Golaghat, 26 in Darrang, 293 in Kamrup (metro), 10 in Barpeta, 139 in Dibrugarh, 20 in Lakhimpur, 7 in Kamrup, 2 in Biswanath, 12 in Tinsukia, 4 in Morigaon, 38 in Jorhat, 2 in Hojai and 10 families in Sonitpur.
According to the notification, the approved families in the Kamrup (metro) district will get 1 katha 5 lessa land as one-time measure for homestead purpose, while the approved families in the 15 other districts will get settlement for land measuring 1 katha 10 lessa. These families will have to pay land premium as per the Zonal Land Valuation.
In case any family is occupying more than the stipulated land, the family will have to pay premium for the extra land at a rate which is 200% more than the Zonal Land Valuation. Only when a family deposits the land premium, the DC concerned will transfer the occupied land to the family.
The notification further stated that when a family gets land settlement, no part of the land can be transferred for a period of 15 years from the date of settlement.
Talking to The Sentinel, State Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Jogen Mohan said, “The government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is an indigenous people-friendly government. After examining all the documents of the 760 families, the government decided to give them land settlement. Under Mission Basundhara 2.0 also, many people have applied for land settlement. Those eligible will be given settlement of land.”
