GUWAHATI: The state government has thus far disbursed Rs 788 crore for the victims of this year's floods, including Rs 119 crore for reconstruction of damaged houses.

The government will require another Rs 1,000 crore or so for reconstruction of damaged embankments, schools buildings, Anganwadi centres and payment of compensation for destroyed crops. The estimate for funds required for reconstruction of damaged roads and bridges will be prepared separately.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday ceremonially launched payment of Rehabilitation Grant (RG) of Rs 119 crore through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to 2.04 lakh families for reconstruction of houses damaged by flood.

The maximum number of 81,538 houses was damaged in the Cachar district, followed by 28,364 houses in the Karimganj district, 20,613 in the Kamrup district, 15,200 in the Nagaon district and 10,564 in the Nalbari district.

Speaking at the ceremonial launch of the RG grant to flood victims, the Chief Minister said that the government has been able to provide assistance to flood-affected people, as mandated by rules, in a comparative short time because it worked in a systematic manner.

Sarma further said that the government will complete assessment of damage to roads and bridges in this year's floods as well as start repair works within September.

It is pertinent to mention that the state government had earlier released Rs 76.76 crore for providing clothing and utensils to 2.02 lakh flood-affected families, along with Rs 10.15 crore as special book grant to 1.01 lakh flood-affected students.
