Guwahati: In a bid to bring about certain changes in the administration and working of private universities in the state, a Bill titled The Assam Private Universities (Amendment) Bill 2025 was laid in the House today. The Bill states that the universities shall not open any new technical, medical, paramedical, nursing and other technical courses with effect from April 1, 2025.

That, the universities shall not be involved in any activity relating to the conversion of any student, faculty or other staff. The universities have to maintain a secular character. It is mandated that a security clearance report has to be obtained in respect of the antecedents or the precedents of the sponsoring body from the Home and Political Department, Assam.

There is a proposal to amend Section 44 of the original Act with a mandate that there will be an inspection of the university carried out by the state government once every three years to verify whether the conditions imposed during the establishment of the university have been complied with and that any deviation in the compliance of the laid-down conditions by the concerned university may lead to dissolution of the university.
