Guwahati: The Assam government has petitioned the Central Empowered Committee appointed by the Supreme Court to examine the destruction of hills in Meghalaya bordering Kamrup Metro district, as Guwahati has to bear the brunt of flooding for this.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that, earlier, the hill-cutting by USTM was causing floods in Guwahati, but now two more big construction works are going on in the hills of Meghalaya on the Assam border. As a result, the floods caused are likely to increase. “Due to this, we have moved the Central Empowered Committee,” he said.

The Central Empowered Committee was formed for monitoring issues related to forests, wildlife and the environment.
