GUWAHATI: The Assam Government deported 13 Bangladeshi nationals, by strictly adhering to legal protocols, to Bangladesh through the Sutarkandi integrated check post in the Sribhumi district. The Assam Police and the BSF handed over the 13 Bangladeshi nationals to the BGB (Border Guard, Bangladesh).
According to Home Department sources, the smooth deportation of the individuals is a testament to the effective collaboration between the border security guards of India and Bangladesh. It also reflects the growing commitment to addressing cross-border migration in a diplomatic manner.
In the recent past, the state Border Police pushed back over 200 Bangladeshi nationals caught on the spot while they were making attempts to enter Assam. After the unrest in Bangladesh, Bangladeshi nationals have been trying to enter India almost every day.
According to sources, legal deportation of judicially declared foreigners has been a time-consuming exercise, as the process involves the external affairs ministries of both the countries. India sends the addresses of the declared foreigners to the authorities concerned in Bangladesh. If the authorities in Bangladesh confirm the authenticity of the given addresses in their country, the deportation becomes easier. If the authorities in Bangladesh say that none of the addresses of declared Bangladeshis given to them are real, the deportation process hits a roadblock.
Foreigners’ tribunals (FTs) in Assam have declared 1.60 lakh immigrants as Bangladeshis, but only 30,115 of the declared Bangladeshis have been officially deported to Bangladesh so far.
