GUWAHATI: Around 26 lakh people who had filed claims and objections after being excluded from the NRC final draft, will now be able to apply for Aadhaar cards. These people have not been able to get their Aadhaar cards and benefits of various schemes as their biometric details remained locked with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) during the National Register of Citizens (NRC) update process under the direction of the Supreme Court. The Assam Government will now submit an affidavit in the Supreme Court to unlock the biometric details of these people.

This decision was taken today during a discussion between the Assam Government and the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) on the NRC update process. During the discussion, it was also decided that there should be a re-verification of the NRC draft and the government will file an affidavit in the apex court in this regard. It was decided that those whose names are excluded from the final NRC, their Aadhaar cards will also get cancelled.

Talking to media persons after the meeting, Implementation of Assam Accord Minister Atul Bora said, "Many indigenous and genuine citizens have been excluded from the NRC draft. Around 26 lakh people have filed claims and objections. They have not been able to get their Aadhaar cards and thus, they are deprived of the benefits of various government schemes. The Assam Government will approach the Supreme Court to unlock the biometric details of these people." He further said that there would be another discussion with other organizations on the clauses of the Assam Accord on March 24.

Ministers Ajanta Neog, Keshab Mahanta, Pijush Hazarika and Jogen Mohan were present in the meeting, along with AASU chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya and president Dipanka Kumar Nath.
