Assam government to develop Baxirhat-Bilasipara National Highway as 4-lane

 74-km stretch has 7 bypasses, 25 bridges, 7 flyovers planned

GUWAHATI: The Assam government will upgrade the stretch of national highway in Lower Assam from Baxirhat to Bilasipara to a four-lane National Highway with an estimated cost of Rs 800 crore.

To develop this stretch, the government appointed the project management consultancy services named Technocrats Advisory Services Pvt. Ltd., in association with M/S Jagadambike Infra Solutions Pvt. Ltd. After conducting field surveys, the consultancy firms submitted the draft inspection report, quality assurance plan, and Stip plan to Assam PWD for scrutiny. After scrutiny, the Assam PWD made some observations and sent back the reports to the consulting services. The consultation firms will now prepare the detailed project report (DPR).

The proposed 4-laning of NH- 17 (new) or NH-31 (old) from Baxirhat on the Assam-West Bengal Border to Bilasipara, excluding Gauripur Bypass, will comprise a total length of 74 km.

The approximate cost of the project is estimated at Rs 800 crore and will have a total of 7 proposed bypasses. The proposed 7 bypasses on NH-17 will be: Halakura (3.42 km), Agomani (2.16 km), Balajan (2.77 km), Alomganj III (3.50 km), Fokiranijhar (6.08 km), Bandhabpara (2.57 km), and Gopigoan Part III (3.16 km).

Moreover, a total of 25 bridges are proposed to be constructed in this stretch, with 4 major bridges and 21 minor bridges planned.

A total of seven flyovers are to be constructed in this stretch of highway: Halakura, Agomoni, Balajan, Alomganj III, Fokiranijhar, Gopigaon Part III, and Bandhabpara. The stipulated completion period of the proposed 4-lane NH project is 108 months from the start date, and land acquisition activity will be started after approval of the DPR, which is in the process of being prepared.
