GUWAHATI: A de-addiction and rehabilitation centre to be run by the Government of Assam at Pamohi in the Kamrup (metro) district was inaugurated today by State Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Pijush Hazarika. The Government of Assam under the banner of the Social Justice and Empowerment Department will open five more rehabilitation centres, one each in Dibrugarh, Tinisukia, Barpeta, Sonitpur, and Golaghat.

In his speech, Pijush Hazarika said addicted people are also part of society, and the plan is to support them and put them back into the mainstream after their de-addiction.

After the Assam Government launched the war on drugs, many youths addicted to drugs and other narcotic substances are trying to give up their addiction and lead a normal life. To help such youths, the government will run the six rehabilitation centres.

The minister also said that after taking charge of the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, he visited many rehab centres and directed the owners to develop the condition of the centres. He added that in the last six months the private rehab centres had improved a lot in terms of their infrastructure and accountability. He also said that starting a rehab centre was not a big issue, but the real challenge was in continuing the centre smoothly in the right direction. The minister directed the departmental officials to be careful and meticulous in running the government rehab centres. He appealed to people to inform him if they had any complaints or suggestions regarding these centres.

Guwahati MP Queen Oja and local MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita were also present at the inauguration.
