GUWAHATI: Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi has expressed grave concern over the widespread use of alcohol and gutkha in the State.

Flagging-off a 60-day 'Anti-drug, tobacco and alcohol awareness campaign' at the Raj Bhawan here on Saturday, Mukhi said that a sizeable number of people are addicted to various harmful substances in Assam. He said that there is widespread abuse of alcohol in the State and this trend must be checked at some point. He suggested that the State Government should bring in a strong law to minimize the prevalence of alcohol in Assam.

He further said that it is a matter for serious thought that gutkha continues to be sold openly under the eyes of the police despite a standing ban imposed by the Supreme Court. "We need to raise our voice to create awareness in the society on the bad effects of drugs, alcohol and tobacco."

Mukhi hailed the efforts of Assam Police in cracking down on drug peddlers and traffickers in the State. He said that the police has dealt a heavy blow on the drug trade, resulting in confiscation of a huge cache of contraband substances in the State. Moreover, in line with the zero-tolerance policy towards the drugs menace, the seized drugs were set on fire. The Governor further said the State Government has been equally strict and uncompromising in dealing with the illicit liquor trade, as the Excise Department along with police personnel conducted raids, particularly in the tea garden areas, and busted several places where illegal manufacturing and trading of liquor were being conducted.

Mukhi said that the new generation should strive hard to create deterrence against consumption of any intoxicating or narcotic substances. The Governor urged upon the educational institutions to motivate the youth to contribute to national development and not to get involved in such harmful practices.

The 60-day awareness campaign has been conceptualized by Byatikram MASDO, a social development organization.
